| Years ago Jesus Ciriza Larraona went to Kashmir to produce silk carpets. Not attracted by synthetic colours and disappointed by the polluting natural dyeing methods, he started to collect information from all over India on traditional dyeing techniques, discovering methods of dyeing dating back several centuries, when heavy metal salts and other polluting substances within dyes were not used. The few masters still alive and some old books provided a basis. Jesus experimented many years to develop several natural dyeing process, integrating all aspects of the cycle, from plants to the treated wastewater flowing back to the fields. In this sprit we invite you to participate in our work. The Colours of Nature is specialized in natural indigo fermentation. This process, is the most earth friendly process, for indigo dyeing. It consumes less water than other indigo dyeing methods, no fixing agents are required and this process does not use hydrosulphite, Indigo fermentation process exists already for more than 7000 years. Following south Indian tradition the dyeing liquid starts its life in huge terra cotta pots, buried in the earth. This sensitive, fermenting liquid is maintained 365 days a year, demanding a daily skillful interaction. Often "natural" dyers avoid the complex fermentation and choose for polluting solutions. The indigo we use is extracted from the leaves of indigofera tinctoria. In the range of natural dye colors, Indigo is the more fast color and it highly appreciated in the world for its aging. The mysteries of birth, flowering and return to the earth are reflected in the gradual toneshifts The cotton cultivation is known for intense application of chemical pesticides.
